frantic times call for desperate measures, or at least for some outside the box thinking. Microsoft, for example, is struggling to promote its Windows Phone platform as a feasible alternative to Android and iOS, but so far its market share (3.7 percent) is barely a blip on the radar (though Windows Phone did surpass Black Berry for third place). Meanwhile, HTC just posted its first quarterly loss and there's little reason to think it will reverse course. Maybe the two can help each other out.

Microsoft's proposal to HTC is that it cram its Windows Phone platform alongside Android on its handsets, Bloomberg reports. As added encouragement, Microsoft is willing to drastically reduce or even eliminate its licensing fee, so the real risk would be in whether or not there would be an audience for dual OS devices, and not the cost of licensing Windows Phone.

HTC was first out of the gate with an Android phone (HTC Dream, otherwise known as the T-Mobile G1) and also the first to offer a Windows Phone handset, though it hasn't touched Windows Phone since June, nor was it planning to anytime soon.

This is an interesting proposal on a number of levels. For one, it shows how far Microsoft is willing to go to get its Windows Phone platform in front of more eyeballs. And on the consumer side, you have to wonder if a dual-booting phone would lure Android users who might be intrigued with Windows Phone, but unwilling to commit for whatever reason. "The company faced challenges due to weakness in the consumer PC market. While the launch of Windows 8 in October 2012 resulted in over 100 million licenses sold, the challenging PC market coupled with the significant product launch costs for Windows 8 and Surface resulted in an 18 percent decline in Windows Division operating income," Microsoft wrote in its proxy statement. "Slower than anticipated sales of Surface RT devices and the decision to reduce prices to accelerate sales resulted in a $900 million inventory charge."

Microsoft gave credit to Ballmer for leading the company in its alteration to a devices and service firm in 2013, and for continuing to make progress in its devices and services strategy.

Valve maintains that its controller, which resembles an X box 360 game pad in shape, is "vastly superior" to what's out there currently. For older titles that don't support game pads  Steam says it "fooled" them into thinking they're communicating with a mouse and keyboard.

The Steam Controller sports dual high resolution track pads as its base. They're also click able  allowing the entire surface to act as a button. According to Steam, the higher fidelity input that's made possible here will be appreciated by PC gamers who are used to gaming on high resolution mice.

"Track pads, by their nature, are less physical than thumb sticks  By themselves, they are 'light touch' devices and don’t offer the kind of visceral feedback that players get from pushing joysticks around," Valve explains. As we investigated track pad based input devices, it became clear through testing that we had to find ways to add more physicality to the experience. It also became clear that 'rumble', as it has been traditionally implemented (a lopsided weight spun around a single axis), was not going to be enough. Not even close."

 

Valve's Steam manager uses a new age band of super-precise hap tic feedback with dual linear resonant actuators. They consist of small, strong, and weighted electro-magnets attached to each of the dual track pads.

There's a touchscreen in the center of the controller, and that too is click able  It will be interesting to see how developers take advantage of this feature, though in its most basic form, you can expect to be able to swipe through menus and tap on various options.

The Steam Controller boasts 16 buttons in all, half of which are accessible without ever lifting your thumbs. All of them have been placed symmetrically, which will be a boon to left-handed gamers who want to reverse the layout.

Finally, the Steam Controller is hackable, so expect some funky mods by the gaming community and third-party developers alike.

Microsoft on Monday introduced the world to the second production of its outside tablet family. According to Microsoft, the Surface 2 and the Surface Pro 2 both pack “significant” improvements in everything from processing power to battery life.

Significant perhaps, but surprising the updates are definitely not, with most, if not all, of the improvements and new accessories having been rumored over the last few months. Predictably, where the outside 2 runs Windows 8.1 RT and packs an Nvidia Tegra 4 SoC, the outside Pro 2 runs Windows 8.1 and boasts a 4th generation Intel Core i5 chip.

The outside 2 has a silver magnesium chassis, full HD display, 3.5-megapixel front camera, 5-megapixel rear camera and a USB 3.0 port. According to Microsoft, the Surface 2 is capable of lasting up to 10 hours on a single charge. The Windows RT-toting tablet will be available in 32GB and 64GB versions.

Over the weekend, Mozilla pressed a new build of Firefox to the Aurora channel. Built from the ground up for Microsoft’s Windows 8 Modern UI, this pre-beta build brings with it, among other things, a tile-based Firefox Start experience.

This touch-friendly Firefox build also supports Windows 8 touch and swipe gestures, Snapped and Fill views, and Windows Share integration, the open-source outfit said in a blog post Saturday. While the new interface is said to be more “streamlined, modern and beautiful”, not a lot has changed under the hood.

“Because this new version of Firefox uses the same powerful Gecko rendering engine as in Firefox desktop, there’s also support for WebGL for compelling 3D graphics and asm.js which supercharges JavaScript in the browser, allowing developers to port high performance C++ games to the Web,” Mozilla wrote in the blog post. “ Hardware accelerated full HTML5 video is also supported, including open video formats like WebM and proprietary formats such as H.264.”

“To test it out, first make sure that Firefox Aurora is your Windows 8 default browser. Then visit the Windows Start screen (if you’re on Windows 8) to locate the Firefox Aurora tile. Visit the All Apps screen if you’re on Windows 8.1 where you can locate the Firefox Aurora tile and pin it to the Windows Start screen.”

Despite having been under development for well over a year now, Firefox Metro is still a fair way from general availability, which Mozilla recently pushed back to late January, 2014 on account of slower-than-expected development.

Price and availability will vary by region, Cooler Master says. In the US, we're scheduled for an October 9th release date, and the windowed version (the right-hand case pictured above) will have an MSRP of $169.99.
